Find Manuscripts

Search by keywords

Type your keywords into the search box and select go. The search will open a new browser window displaying your results in the Queensland Digital Library.

A keyword search will find your keywords in any field of the record. You will need to read through the finding aid to find where your search term appears. In large finding aids, you may prefer to use the “Find (on This Page)” function of your web browser, or Ctrl+F.

Advanced searching

Comprehensive help with searching is available on every page of the Queensland Digital Library. Once in the Queensland Digital Library, the following advanced search options are available.

Creator

Enter a surname (to find individuals or families) or the name of an organization, and select “in creator/contributor” from the occurring menu. The results list will show all the collections in which your search term appears in a creator field. A creator may be responsible for an entire collection, a series, or an item. A creator search can also be used to find the name of an exhibiting gallery in the Johnstone Gallery Archive.

Title

Enter a title, or part of a title, and select “in Title” from the occurring menu. Searching Title will find the title of a collection, series or item.

Subject

Enter a subject heading and select “in Subject” from the occurring menu. A subject search is most useful when looking for broad themes, eg World War I, immigration, or exploration and discovery. Subject headings are currently being added to Manuscripts Queensland.

Navigating a finding aid

When searching Manuscripts Queensland, the results list will include collection, series and item level records.  For collections with series and item records, use the "Click Related records" link at the top of the record to find more records relating to the same collection. For example, if you are looking at a collection level record, use the link to view series records (child records) and for each series you can view items. Likewise, if you start with an item record, use the link to view its series and collection records (parent records).
